Downhill Longboard

A icy ride down a bobsled track on an upgraded board.

This video answers a question you probably never asked yourself: What would happen if you went down a bobsled track on a longboard outfitted with ice blades?

Well, filmmaker and daredevil Danny Strasser wondered just that, and the video shows what happened next.

It’s not always easy to tell the finer differences between a skateboard and a longboard, but longboards generally come in different sizes, have different wheels, and are, duh, longer than skateboards. They’re also a more recent invention than their short-decked brethren. Longboards with ice blades? Well, that’s a whole different wrinkle.

The bobsled run in question is the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track in Latvia. It’s 1,200 meters long and designed for bobsleds, luge sleds, and skeleton sleds—so, not longboards.

Strasser is not new to the track itself—he’s been coming to Sigulda with his traditional street-appropriate longboards during the summertime for 20 years to cruise its snowless concrete tracks.

“I am addicted to bobsled tracks,” he says in the video, and he got the idea of going down Sigulda an ice-blade longboard 10 years ago, dreaming about it ever since. He claims no one else has ever done such a thing before.

On March 6, Strasser decided to make his dream come true. He mounted two GoPro cameras on his longboard, one looking back at the board and one looking up at him, and held a third on a selfie stick. This intense video is the result. Spoiler: He lived.
