A Space Station Built to Fight the Cold War

Declassified documents detail a scrapped plan for fighting the Soviets in space.

According to newly released documents from the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, the United States was working on a top-secret crewed space station in the 1960s that would’ve provided detailed intelligence on the Soviet Union’s activities.

Named the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, the spacecraft would have housed crews working on Project Dorian, a high-powered camera system capable of taking extremely high-resolution photographs.
