The Flying Spaghetti Monster Lives

The deeply weird creatures oil workers spot near deep-water rigs.

While doing routine maintenance on an oil well off the coast of Angola, a team from BP spotted a—oh god, what is that? They nicknamed the 4,000-foot-deep creature the “flying spaghetti monster,” after the deity.

Remote operated underwater vehicles working for offshore oil and gas companies routinely come across interesting specimens like this, and pass their footage along to deep sea research groups. The National Oceanography Centre in Great Britain and the SERPENT Project reviewed the footage, and suggested the workers likely encountered a siphonophore, which belong to a group of aquatic animals including jellyfish. May it float peacefully away from the rest of us, RAmen.
