Fast and Airborne

Watch an IndyCar driver walk away from a 200 mph crash.

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to flip an open-wheel race car traveling more than 200 miles per hour, look no further than the video above.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves was on the second lap of his practice run at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday when he was involved in what can be only be described as a spectacular (and near-deadly) crash. After losing control of his car coming into Turn 1, he spun out completely, ultimately crashing into the wall, going airborne, and rag-dolling down the track.

Captured via the Team Penske car’s onboard camera, the footage of the crash is incredible and disturbing.

Amazingly, Castoneves walked away from the ordeal unscathed, needing only a few moments to collect himself on the track before walking away from the scene.

“In all aspects, I have to say I was very lucky there was no big shunt,” he said in a statement. “The accident was most impressive, but the good news is I am feeling very good.”

Impressive indeed.
