Record-high beef prices are here—and unlike the lime shortage, they’re not going to get better.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the U.S. cattle herd has fallen to 87.7 million, its lowest level since 1951, when there were half as many Americans. The record beef prices that are resulting will likely stretch through 2015.
