E.T.’s Curse

The strange saga of the world’s worst video game.

Released in 1982 for the Atari 2600, E.T. the video game was an epic financial and critical disaster, but the game has been lovingly reclaimed as the worst of its kind.

According to legend, truckloads of unsold cartridges are buried in a landfill in Alamogordo, N.M.—and it increasingly looks like they may stay there.
