A major obstacle to creating life from scratch was just overcome.

In a potential watershed for synthetic biology, researchers report in the journal Science that they’ve built the first-ever complex synthetic chromosome in a lab. That could enable us to reengineer and customize organisms for new uses, with applications both practical and futuristic.
