You can find Slate’s ongoing coverage of Thursday night’s shooting in Dallas here. In particular, you might want to read Isaac Chotiner on grieving at a time when every event becomes a political battlefield; Leon Neyfakh on the Dallas Police Department’s commendable record of reform; and Will Oremus on the man wrongly identified as the sniper.
Other Slate reads for the weekend:

- Remember Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun crusade? It’s still around—and it’s starting to show results.
- Neil deGrasse Tyson’s idea for a nation ruled by science is self-contradictory and dumb.
- This dissent by Justice Sonia Sotomayor is one of the most eloquent things you’ll read on police violence against minorities.
- I had never heard of the magazine Closer but it sounds very appealing!
Not from Slate
- Two powerful pieces of writing on Diamond Reynold’s Facebook Live video of the aftermath of her boyfriend Philando Castile’s shooting: one by New York Times TV critic James Poniewozik, the other by MTV News’ Doreen St. Félix.
- The Rio Olympics are shaping up to be a complete catastrophe.
- The great songwriter John Darnielle answers the question, “West Virginia: Yea or nay?”
- Why do American cops kill so many more people than European cops? A couple of obvious answers and one surprising one.

Very Short Q-and-A
This week’s personal question is addressed to Slate Video executive producer Ayana Morali, who is participating, along with many of you, in the Slate Anti-Marathon.
What is your Anti-Marathon project, and why did you pick it?
I’m learning Hebrew. Or relearning it: It was actually my first language, but I lost it some time ago. I’d love to be able to speak directly to my grandmother, my last living grandparent, before she passes—to ask her about her childhood in Morocco and other things that feel a world away.
How is it coming along?
Well, I mean, it’s coming along. I’m behind, of course. Which is why I joined this project—I’ve been wanting to study Hebrew for a few years now but kept back-burnering it because #life. I thought the pressure of participating in a group setting would get my ass into gear.
Thanks, Ayana, and בהצלחה!
And thank you for your Slate Plus membership, which makes our journalism possible. See you next week!
