Topher Lundell is a used-book seller at Second Story Books in Washington, D.C. We met with him in the shop, where he talked about the research that goes into pricing the volumes that line the store’s shelves. He also showed off some rarer treasures, including impressive first editions by Charles Dickens and Stephen King. In the process, we talked about how the internet shapes the business model of contemporary used-book stores.

In a Slate Plus extra, Lundell shows off some of the pulp science-fiction novels that pass through the store, discussing their charmingly eccentric cover art.
