This week on The Moment, Brian Koppelman talks to Tom McCarthy, writer and director of Spotlight, a new film that tells the true story of how a Pulitzer Prize–winning Boston Globe team unmasked the widespread cover-up of child abuse in Boston’s Catholic Church. Tom has also written and directed a number of other films, including The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win. The two talk about how Tom bounced back from the critical and commercial failure of his 2014 movie, The Cobbler, to create what is now being regarded as a front-runner for Best Picture. Plus, Tom discusses his career as an actor, the role of journalism in today’s society, and how some of our most calamitous mistakes aren’t the result of one big bad decision but rather a lot of small ones.
