This week on Slate Plus, should adults get dressed up for Halloween?
On this week’s Slate Culture Gabfest, the critics discuss Designated Survivor, a post-9/11, high-anxiety show from ABC that stars Kiefer Sutherland as a low-ranking Cabinet member thrust into the presidency after a terrorist attack. Is Sutherland now playing the anti–Jack Bauer? Next, Aisha Harris joins Stephen and Dana to discuss 13th, the new Netflix documentary from Ava DuVernay about the United States’ criminal justice system. The documentary chronicles how the Thirteenth Amendment led to mass incarceration in the U.S., examining the link between slavery and today’s prison-industrial complex. Last, the critics are joined by Slate technology writer Will Oremus to break down the death of Vine. Were its six-second loops ready to die?
