Senior Software Engineer, The Big Money
Job Profile
The well-suited candidate will be comfortable working closely with the editors to develop, maintain and enhance the family of Slate Group Web sites, including TheBigMoney.com. This individual will be working directly with editorial staff to propose, define, design, and implement creative long-term solutions for recurring business needs, address daily production system issues, and provide leadership to the development team.

Strong troubleshooting, communication skills, and sense of humor are a must. This is an ideal position for a highly motivated senior web developer with experience in content-driven Web sites. This is primarily a front-end and middle-tier development position.

This position requires approximately 0 percent travel. Currently this position is open in Washington, D.C.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to design and code medium- to large-size projects on both short- and long-term schedules.
  • Minimum five years of Web development experience including design, development and testing.
  • Experience in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and iterative methodologies.
  • Understanding of layered architecture, MVC and other design patterns.
  • Solid experience with LAMP.
  • Strong experience with Object-Oriented Design and Implementation.
  • Good understanding of CMS system for public-facing media Web sites.
  • Development experience with open-source CMS system(s). Experience with Drupal 5 and above a major plus.
  • Experience in developing Web 2.0-powered Web sites.
  • Must be able and willing to keep pace with advances in web technologies.
  • Must be proficient in at least one of the following programming languages: PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby. PHP 5.0 development experience is a major plus.
  • Tableless CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, XML, XHTML.
  • Experience with relational databases and stored procedures. MySQL and/or PostgreSQL preferred.
  • Experience with developing on Linux and/or Solaris systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to clearly document and communicate technical designs to team members.
  • Experience with web site Front End design and implementation.
  • Experience with source code control systems. (CVS, Mercurial, Subversion preferred.)
  • Ability to develop and execute Unit Testing.
  • Experience in supporting 24x7 production systems, including deployment, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Strong analysis skills with a thorough understanding of application and infrastructure bottlenecks.
  • BS in CS, CIS, or math or equivalent.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Java or .NET experience a plus.
  • Experience in developing Web Services. Good understanding of SOAP, WSDL and UDDI.
  • Creativity and innovation.
  • Experience in Flash development.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to design and code medium- to large-size projects on both short- and long-term schedules.
  • Minimum eight years of Web development experience including design, development, and testing of backend and middleware systems.
  • Must be proficient in ASP.NET and C# and have .NET 1.1, 2.0 and 3.5 experience.
  • Proficient in developing MS Web Services.
  • Proficient in MS SQL Server and stored procedures.
  • Experience with SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI.
  • XML and XSLT coding experience a huge plus.
  • Experience administering Windows IIS servers and MS SQL Server.
  • Project and development lead skills required.
