Slate Seeks Editorial Assistant

We’re hiring!

Slate is hiring an editorial assistant in its New York office. The assistant’s primary responsibility will be to manage Slate’s discussion board, “the Fray.” Responsibilities include working with Slate editors to facilitate communication between Slate writers and readers; combing “the Fray” for smart posts to feature on Slate article pages; and monitoring the Fray for spam, offensive comments, and the like. The assistant will also work with top editors to develop Slate’s strategy for its discussion board in the future. In addition, the editorial assistant will provide editorial and administrative assistance to Slate’s culture editors as needed. Ideal candidates will be organized, diplomatic, and have excellent writing skills. They will also demonstrate good editorial judgment and an avid interest in online magazines, interactivity, and the future of online journalism. Some editorial experience preferred. The position is a one-year contract position, full-time, without benefits.

We’re hoping to find someone who loves Slate, has thought a lot about online communities, and is eager to help engage with our current system and help us figure out what the next one should be.
