How to win the U.S. Memory Championship.

Former Slate intern Joshua Foer took top honors at the USA Memory Championship Saturday, besting almost 40 other contestants. Last year, Foer attended the contest as a spectator and outlined the anatomy of a win for Slate. He set the scene: “The contest itself unfolded with all the excitement of, say, the SAT. … There was a lot of dramatic temple massaging and nervous foot tapping and the occasional blank stare of defeat but none of the public agony of a basketball game or spelling bee.”
