Former Slate intern Joshua Foer took top honors at the USA Memory Championship Saturday, besting almost 40 other contestants. Last year, Foer attended the contest as a spectator and outlined the anatomy of a win for Slate. He set the scene: “The contest itself unfolded with all the excitement of, say, the SAT. … There was a lot of dramatic temple massaging and nervous foot tapping and the occasional blank stare of defeat but none of the public agony of a basketball game or spelling bee.”
