The Slate Oscars

How did 2001 rate for movies? “Much better than anticipated, I think. Maybe as good as 1999. Nowhere near as good as 1971,” wrote David Edelstein in Slate’s annual “Movie Club.” Back in December, Slate asked film critics Roger Ebert, David Edelstein, Sarah Kerr, Jonathan Rosenbaum, and A.O. Scott to assess the field; the result was more than two weeks of impassioned debate. Click here for their first week of discussion,  here for their second, and here for their finale. And take another look at David Edelstein’s reviews of Best Picture nominees A Beautiful Mind, Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, and Moulin Rouge.
