A Life of Letters

Joyce Maynard reveals all. Again. And again.

Joyce Maynard is making headlines again, this time by auctioning off 14 love letters written to her by J.D. Salinger. The last time she made headlines, it was for writing a book about her love affair with the famously reclusive Salinger. Alex Beam, a college classmate of Maynard's, wrote an essay for Slate on the sad tale of The Woman Who Mistook Herself for Something Interesting.

Alex Beam is a columnist at the Boston Globe. His e-mail address is beam@globe.com.
