Ray of Hope

Why today was a good day for Mitt Romney.

Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

34 days to go:

The past week, the Obama and Romney camps have downplayed their respective candidates’ debate preparation in an attempt to lower expectations—and to possibly get more credit for successful performances. It’s a time-honored tradition. So who’s winning the managed expectations game? Romney. According to an Oct. 2 Quinnipiac University poll, 58 percent of voters expect Obama will win the debates, and only 28 percent expect that Romney will. That includes 52 percent of independents and 20 percent of Republicans. Obama may be considered to be the better debater—but that just means he has to do more than show up.
