Fighting Malaria in Uganda

A slide show from the front lines.

In anticipation of the first U.S. Malaria Awareness Day on April 25, award-winning photographer Chien-Chi Chang is traveling through Uganda, where malaria is the leading cause of death, claiming as many as 110,000 lives a year. Chang’s photo series inaugurates Magnum on Malaria, a new partnership between Magnum Photos and the nonprofit Malaria No More to chronicle the global fight against malaria through photography and to raise money for bed nets in Africa. (To donate a $10 bed net, click here.)

Chang’s photographs capture the tragic reality of the disease as well as aggressive new efforts to combat it. He visits clinics overrun with malaria victims, fields and factories where African farmers grow and process key ingredients for new malaria drugs, and a rural bed-net distribution program reaching mothers and children vulnerable to the mosquito bites that transmit the disease.
