170. FRANCES WU–$1.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA School of Social Work to establish the Chinese-American Golden Age Association-Dr. Frances Wu Endowed Chair. This is the first endowed chair in the School of Social Work. Wu is a retired Monterey Park social worker, and founder and president of the Chinese-American Golden Age Association.

CHACE III–$1.4 million to BROWN UNIVERSITY (R.I.) to endow the women’s basketball head-coaching position in honor of student-athlete Liz Turner from the Class of 1998. Head coach Jean Burr will be the first occupant of the chair. As part of their gift to Brown, the Chaces have earmarked $400,000 to provide general budgetary support for women’s athletics at Brown. Liz Chace is a Brown trustee and member of the Corporation Committee on Athletics, vice president of the Brown Sports Foundation, and president of the Friends of Brown Women’s Basketball. She is founder and president of Residential Properties, Ltd., a statewide realty agency.



194. DAVID GEFFEN–$1.4 million to AIDS ACTION COUNCIL (Washington, D.C.) to purchase a building in Washington that will serve as the council’s new headquarters facility. David Geffen is the “G” in DreamWorks SKG.



198. ANDREW JODY GESSOW–$1.33 million to the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND from the president of Signature Resorts to establish a chair and a research endowment in rotorcraft engineering in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.



199. ARTHUR J. and SARA JO KOBACKER–$1.3 million to the UNITED WAY OF PALM BEACH COUNTY (Fla.), the largest donation in the chapter’s history. The donors said they believe the best way to attack poverty is to improve children’s lives. The Kobackers moved to Boca Raton in 1996 from Columbus, Ohio, where he founded the Kobacker Co., which owned stores in 31 states. In 1994 he sold the stores to May Department Stores.



200. SARAH P. and WILLIAM R. HAMBRECHT–$1.25 million to the MOREHOUSE COLLEGE School of Medicine, from this San Francisco businessman and his wife, through their family foundation. The gift will go toward the college’s first endowed chair. William Hambrecht is the founder and chairman of Hambrecht & Quist LLC, an investment-banking firm specializing in emerging growth companies.
