The gift was made in memory of Marjorie Anne "Midge" Glendening, Debra Karmanos' mother, who spent time in the hospital's emergency room and intensive-care unit before her death in 1996.

The gift will pay for the purchase of a half-acre site directly across the street from the museum's current location, where it plans to build a new, $20-million, three-story art center with studio space, classrooms, and creative exhibits. Jon Shirley said it was the museum's mission of hands-on arts education at the new building that persuaded them to make the donation.
