81. LARRY and SHERRYBENAROYA and FAMILY–$3.5 million through the family foundation to the VIRGINIA MASON RESEARCH CENTER (Seattle) for diabetes research. The gift will establish a Diabetes Rapid Research Fund, which will, according to Research Center Director Dr. Jerry Nepom, “build swiftly on new scientific discoveries in diabetes and autoimmune diseases as they happen worldwide.” The new building now under construction will be named the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason. Members of the Benaroya family have long supported Virginia Mason Medical Center and its work treating diabetes. They have also been prominent supporters of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, the largest nongovernmental sponsor of diabetes research in the world.



81. ROBERT B. PAMPLIN SR. and ROBERT B. PAMPLIN JR.–$3.5 million to VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY for scholarships. Robert B. Pamplin Sr. is the retired chairman of Georgia-Pacific and chairman of R.B. Pamplin Co., a holding company of which Robert B. Pamplin Jr. is president. Both men are Oregon residents.



81. CAL TURNER JR.–Total 1997 contributions:$3.5 million. A gift of at least $1.5 million to the VANDERBILT DIVINITY SCHOOL (Tenn.) from this 1962 alumnus and trustee. The gift will establish the Cal Turner Chancellor’s Chair in Wesley Studies at the school and a program to develop ministerial leadership for the United Methodist Church within the Nashville area. Turner is chairman and CEO of Dollar General Corp. in Nashville. While the amount was not announced, chairs at Vanderbilt require gifts of at least $1.5 million. Earlier this year, Turner made a $2-million gift to BELMONT UNIVERSITY, also in Tennessee.



84. ANDRE HULL and DUVAHL RIDGWAY-HULL–$3.4 million to LONGWOOD COLLEGE (Va.) for scholarships in education.



85. JULES and ROSE SETNOR–$3.2 million to the music school at their alma mater, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY (N.Y.). The gift is the largest in the 120-year-old music school’s history. It will now bear the names of the Setnors. The money will go toward endowing merit-based scholarships in the school. The couple met at a dance on their first day of college in 1929 and married while Jules Setnor was completing medical school in 1933.



86. THE ANDERSON FAMILY–$3 million through their family foundation to endow the Center for Economic Research and a chair in economic analysis at CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY (Calif.) from this Ontario, Calif., family.



86. ARNOLD BECKMAN–$3 million to CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY for the construction of a campus business and technology center from the family foundation of Arnold and the late Mabel Beckman.



86. GEORGE and MARYLOU BOONE–$3 million to the HUNTINGTON LIBRARY ART COLLECTIONS AND BOTANICAL GARDENS (Calif.) to renovate a historic building and provide new exhibition space. The Boones are San Marino, Calif., residents.



86. ROBERT and JOYCE BUCKMAN–$3 million to ASBURY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY (Ky.) from the CEO of Buckman Laboratories and his wife to expand a program that offers educational courses via the Internet.



86. RICHARD DeVOS–$3 million to LEE COLLEGE (Tenn.) to help create a college of education and accelerate Lee College’s transformation into a university. DeVos is the co-founder of Amway and owner of the Orlando Magic basketball team.
