Arianna Huffington and Harry Shearer
Entry 45:
Good morning, Harry. Today is election day. Have you voted yet? I can't believe the number of propositions on the ballot. And the kind of propositions. Like Proposition 220--whether or not to consolidate Supreme and Municipal Courts. Now, I have tremendous faith in the wisdom of the American people, but I don't want them deciding whether, for instance, the Fed should tighten up the M-2 money supply or what exactly is the correct readiness levels for American forces in the Persian Gulf. I don't want to have to take a vote before we can assign a carrier group the task of taking out Baghdad. See, I'm no expert in military affairs, but I think that somehow that might ruin the element of surprise.
The one piece of good news is that Al Checchi will be easily breaking Michael's spending record. Checchi will have spent about $40 million to lose a statewide race. You know, four years ago it only cost $28 million to lose. And to think Alan Greenspan keeps claiming that there are no signs that inflation is recurring.
Anyway, Mr. Checchi, just this morning my ex-husband told me when he picked up the kids for school that it's with no mixed feelings whatsoever that he hands over to you the spending crown. Wear it in good health. And enjoy many happy Nexis-mentions and all the jokes people will make at your expense. I know I did.
