Love in Three Photos: the 20 Winning Stories

Sweet and heartbreaking photo haikus from Slate readers.

We asked Slate readers to submit their love stories in three photos. “Think of this as a photo haiku,” we said, though fitting the words into a traditional haiku structure was not a requirement. More than anything we were simply looking for good stories, presented concisely in three parts. We received dozens of submissions: tales of heartbreak and enduring love, pithy poems and complex narratives. In some cases where an entry left us extremely intrigued, but confused, we worked with readers to fine-tune their submissions. Thanks to all who participated. After lengthy consideration, here are 20 of the best:
