A sound recorded deep in the Pacific has been a lively mystery for years—even if it’s probably been solved.

In 1997, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded a mysterious sound deep in the Pacific Ocean. The sound was nicknamed the Bloop, and its origins have been a matter of informed and not-so-informed debate in the years since.
