Mad Men Zinger of the Week: “New Business”
Slate’s TV Club picks their favorite Mad Men lines of the episode.
In any given episode of Mad Men, the only thing more likely to come out of a character’s mouth than the trailing smoke of a Lucky Strike cigarette is a witty one-liner.
As we enter the final days of Sterling Cooper & Partners, Slate’s TV Club will celebrate the show’s retorts and rejoinders by highlighting a Mad Men Zinger of the Week for Slate Plus.
Agree with Hanna? Disagree with John? Think that Don’s conversation with Megan should have been in the running this week? Vote below, and if we missed your favorite, let us know in the comments.
Last week’s most popular Mad Men Zinger of the Week was Julia’s pick from Pete Campbell: “You should write an adventure story. I mean, do you know how great you’re going to look on a book jacket?” Julia is currently in the lead.
Julia’s pick for Episode 2
Meredith: “How do you go to sleep at night knowing the Manson brothers could be running around?”
Harry Crane: “The Manson family.”
Don Draper: “Are they coming in?”
Julia’s reaction: This is a joke at the expense of the whole industry—Don’s kidding, but anyone could be a client.
Hanna’s pick for Episode 2
Diana: “I lied to you.”
Don Draper: “Already?”
Hanna’s reaction: There was such a heavy, soap-operatic feel to the Don/Diana interactions. And then every once in a while a funny line, like this one.
John’s pick for Episode 2
Roger Sterling: “How about at least giving me a pat on the back for remembering I had a meeting?”
John’s reaction: Even in a lean week, I can always count on Sterling to buoy my spirits with his amiable dissolution.
