Perhaps Baumbach and Cronenberg will have the last laugh. The New York Times is already confused, and Kicking & Screaming hasn't even been released. Just last weekend, Dave Kehr offered a lineup of summer movies. On the newspaper's Web site, the link to Ferrell's Kicking & Screamingtakes readers to a 1995 write-up of Baumbach's Kicking and Screaming, which calls the film "one of the better examples" of the "Generation X comedy-drama" typified by Slacker and Singles. Will Ferrell as a soul-searching, philosophizing, counterculture nonconformist—that's aperformance that would have audiences kicking and screaming.
